How Do You Imagine a Digitalized Bangladesh?

A country where visually impaired students can use  smartphones to read books in Bangla

Where anyone can just dial a number for everyday questions or ask anything they want to know

Computers being able to read, speak and comprehend Bengali are the three pillars on which the technological future of Bangladesh will stand

Bengali.AI Computer Vision Challenge 2019

This year we focus on teaching computers to read handwritten text

Bengali comes from the Abugida Family of Languages

Abugida Languages have specific styles which make them harder for computers to learn

Graphical units that are sequentially arranged to form words are called Graphemes

Proton

While English Graphemes are comprised of alphabets, Bengali Graphemes are more complex with conjuncts and diacritics.

Considering all the combinations, there can be upto 10,000 different Graphemes in Bengali

This year the challenge is on

Multi-Label Bengali Handwritten Grapheme Recognition

Given the image of a handwritten grapheme, the challenge task is to recognize the Grapheme Root, Vowel Diacritic and Modifier

Grapheme recognition is a stepping stone towards Bengali Optical Character Recognition, which can digitize any form of written document, i.e. class lectures, prescriptions, ledgers, etc

If made free for public use, tools like these can empower even a nine year old developer into bringing innovative solutions to his community

The Bengali.AI Computer Vision Challenge is designed to promote open-source and enable people with the power of AI

The dataset is a milestone for Handwritten Text recognition as a whole!

The scope of the competition extends beyond Bengali with knowledge transfer on cousin languages

It also puts Bengali on the Handwritten OCR research map right after English, Arabic and Chinese

The competition will be hosted on

We are crowd-sourcing 1296 Unique Graphemes statistically selected based on commonality
